This is a much more serious expression of Two Paddocks Pinot Noir. Dark blackberry fruit, whole-bunch spice and dried herbs give it plenty of depth, while the palate is rich and powerful without losing that lovely Central Otago elegance. The tannins are beautifully resolved, the oak sits neatly in the background, and there’s real length and persistence through the finish.
What makes it particularly special is the story behind The Fusilier Vineyard, named in honour of Sam Neill’s father, Major Dermot Neill. It gives the wine an extra sense of place and history, and as a rare single-vineyard release, this is Two Paddocks showing what one exceptional site can do in a great vintage.
And, to borrow a line from one of Sam’s more famous adventures — “Life finds a way.” In this case, it has found a pretty spectacular way of expressing itself through Pinot Noir.
