This is a pretty special collaboration, bringing together Ernst Loosen of Germany’s Dr. Loosen Estate and Peter Barry of Jim Barry Wines, two families with a serious passion for Riesling and generations of experience behind them.
Wild fermented and then aged on lees for two years, there’s a lot more complexity here than your typical Clare Valley Riesling. White peach, guava, lime and green apple jump out first, with citrus zest, subtle florals and a lovely flinty, mineral edge.
The palate has plenty of fruit weight with white peach and blood orange, before that classic Riesling acidity pulls everything back into line. There’s a chalky, savoury character underneath it all that gives the wine real depth and a long, precise finish.
A great meeting of German Riesling tradition and Clare Valley fruit, complex, beautifully balanced and a seriously interesting expression of the variety.
