A fascinating white and a great example of why Assyrtiko is starting to get so much attention in Australia. The variety originates from the Greek island of Santorini, where it is prized for its naturally high acidity, citrus character and distinctive mineral, almost saline edge. Jim Barry were the first to plant Assyrtiko in Australia, establishing it at Lodge Hill in the Clare Valley in 2012 after Peter Barry first tasted the variety in Santorini.

In the glass it shows bright citrus, white peach and subtle floral notes, with a lovely stony minerality running through the palate. There’s plenty of mouth-watering acidity, but also enough texture and fruit weight to keep everything nicely balanced, finishing crisp, dry and slightly saline.

If you enjoy Clare Valley Riesling, this is the easiest comparison — similarly fresh, dry and acid-driven, but Assyrtiko tends to have a little more texture and a distinctive salty, mineral character. A really interesting wine and one well worth trying if you want something a little different without venturing too far away from the style of a good dry Riesling.
