This is my favourite Champagne, and for me it consistently delivers everything I want from the style. Mailly Grand Cru Brut Réserve is rich and generous, with ripe fruit, fine bubbles and those beautiful brioche, toast and freshly buttered bread characters that make great Champagne so compelling. There’s plenty of depth, but it never loses its freshness or elegance, finishing long, balanced and incredibly moreish. Independent reviews regularly praise its fruit, complexity and balance, with recent scores including 91 points from James Suckling and Bettane + Desseauve, while Falstaff has previously rated it 93 points. What makes it even more impressive is that it is made entirely from Grand Cru fruit. Mailly is one of the relatively few villages in Champagne historically classified at the highest Grand Cru level, and the estate’s vineyards are all located within Mailly-Champagne on the Montagne de Reims. The Brut Réserve is predominantly Pinot Noir with Chardonnay, giving it that wonderful combination of power, richness and finesse. For the quality, pedigree and sheer drinking pleasure, I think this is one of the standout Champagnes around.
